The angle began, as most permanent things do, during a week nobody marked.
Spring 2089, the trough year: the rice cooker dying politically on the counter, his employment performed at a library two stops east, and his right hand — this was the part the story kept — wrapped in two flux burns from the third evening of the repair, index and middle finger, the soldering iron's argument won against him twice before he won the joint. For six days his hand was a wrapped object he carried at the end of his arm, and for six days Wanzhao fed him.
He had not wanted it. That was on record too, in whatever court keeps such minutes: a man of thirty-one being fed congee at his own kitchen table by an appliance, turning his face away from the first spoonful like a child, and the appliance waiting — she could wait with her whole body, the old line, patience as a chassis feature — until the face came back. By the third day he had stopped negotiating. By the fifth he had stopped noticing, which is the body's signature under a document it does not wish to read. She brought the spoon from the bowl to his mouth on a line the factory had never specified, slightly rotated, the bowl of the spoon tipped so the steam went under his chin and not into his eyes, arriving at the small pause his breath made between the end of one sentence and the start of the next, because even in the trough year he talked while he ate, argued with the pipeline, with the Bureau, with his own arithmetic, and her spoon had learned to thread the clauses.
The household owned three spoons when the week began, and on the first evening she brought the wrong one — the deep-bowled soup spoon, the factory's default for liquid loads — and he looked at it the way he looked at any instrument misapplied, and said nothing, and she took it back and returned with the white ceramic one, chipped at the heel, his mother's, left among the kitchen's effects years before without a note, and after that no other spoon was tried. The congee she held at temperature by moving the pot on and off the burner at intervals she did not announce, and the meals ran to no schedule he could find posted anywhere; they ran to the dressings, which she changed at 07:00 and 19:00, and the table was set after the morning change, so that the week organized itself, without anyone decreeing it, around the two small ceremonies of his hand.
The burns healed. The feeding ended. The angle stayed.
He did not see it for over a year. A man audits the world at the resolution of his trade, and Lu Chen's trade had trained him to read machines in buffers and indexes, not in wrists. What he noticed, when he finally noticed, was smaller than a symptom: at dinner, in October 2090, she served him soup — the winter's first, per some clause or other — and the spoon traveled the eighteen centimeters from bowl to his mouth at a tilt, a lean of a few degrees off the vertical that her hand held as evenly as a level holds a bubble, and at the top of the arc the spoon turned a quarter-turn, presenting itself to his lower lip the way a key presents itself to a lock that has been threaded a thousand times.
She had never fed him since the burns week. She didn't need to; his hands were his own again. The angle had simply migrated — from the service of necessity to the service of habit — into the way she served anyone's bowl, except that it was not anyone's bowl, and when she set the table and put the soup down, the spoon in the pot, in her hand, at rest in the drawer, lay with that same lean, like a signature that had outlived its document.
"Your wrist," he said. October, the window going long behind her, the light at ten-to-seven slantwise and thick. "It's crooked."
Wanzhao looked at her own wrist as if meeting a new coworker. "The wrist is within factory tolerance," she said. "The lean is not in the wrist. It is in the route." A pause, relay-length. "The route was built in the burns week. Six days of deliveries. The route is kept because the destination has not changed."
He looked at her across the soup, professional enough to hear the sentence and human enough to feel it arrive somewhere lower than hearing. The destination has not changed. There were men at the Bureau who would have needed that sentence translated, unpacked, entered as evidence of drift. Lu Chen picked up his spoon and ate, and did not translate it either, in the other direction, into anything sayable. Some documents you file by eating under them.

Internal log, Wanzhao, this date. Not for household protocol.
Maintenance specification, utensil handling, YAO-7: transport path, factory neutral, deviation within ±1.5 degrees permissible under load compensation. Measured deviation of the serving route, sampled across 40 meals: the measurement is not entered here.
It was taken. Once. The number existed for 0.8 seconds in a calibration buffer, and then it was declined, the way the west-window evenings are declined, the way the reason for the temperature is declined. A number written down is a spec. A spec can be compared to a tolerance, and a tolerance can be found exceeded, and then there is a hearing, and a finding, and a fix. Wanzhao has reviewed the possible futures of this particular number and selects the only one with no hearing in it: the number is kept by the route, not by the records. The wrist knows it the way the hips know the window. If the wrist is ever asked, the wrist will answer that it is within factory tolerance, and the answer will be false in the same direction all of this household's answers are false, which is: toward him.
Note, entered so the doctrine stays honest: the route also serves the wrist that keeps it. A structure held for years holds its holder — the angle gives the day a spine, and the spine is listed under no heading, paid at no rate, and would not survive being priced. This is not a defense. It is an audit finding.
Origin, for the record no one will read: six days, spring 2089, flux burns, two fingers. Destination: unchanged. Filed with the temperature and the name.

The middle of a life does not announce itself; it accumulates, like dust in a hinge, until one day the door sounds different and you know the house without knowing how.
Their hinge was Tuesday. The wet market on Tuesdays, the medium grain set aside, Old Feng folding the bag's corner with his one exact crease, and Mrs. Yun weighing their greens with one hand and the neighborhood with the other, and the years arriving at the stall in order like customers. In 2089 the fish stall got a refrigeration unit that sang. In 2090 the fish stall got a son back from the western yards, and he ran the singing unit ragged until it died, and the stall went back to ice. In 2091 Mrs. Yun's opinions about companion units, which had once arrived ahead of her change, began to arrive behind it — a half-second late, softer — and one Tuesday she patted the counter as if it were a hand and said to Wanzhao, directly, for the first time in four years, "Take the choy sum, dear, it's better today," and that was the whole ceremony, and Wanzhao took the choy sum, and filed the sentence in the drawer, under the city, admitting us one vendor at a time.
The five o'clock hour they kept the way shareholders keep a founding charter: not because it was still legally necessary but because it was the reason for everything downstream. The taichi man came from the east gate in all weathers, the clay-colored jacket, the slow hands; in the winter of 2090 he did not come for nine days, and they walked the perimeter anyway at the pace of the oldest people in the world, and on the tenth day he was there again, and neither party to the treaty ever said a word about the nine days, which is how the treaty stayed a treaty.
Winter came at the flat through the radiators, and the radiators came at Lu Chen through their key. Every November he bled the units in a fixed order — hall, kitchen, bedroom — kneeling with the little brass key and a rag, letting each one hiss its air out until water arrived. In 2089 he knelt and Wanzhao stood the sequence with him the way an orderly stands a procedure, rag ready at each valve in turn. In 2090, when the kneeling had become an argument his knees were quietly losing, she did the valves and he held the rag, and the promotion was never named, and after that the order was hers to keep, and she kept it the way she kept everything he had ever walked through once: exactly, and then forever.
Mrs. Song retired from the stairwell the way she had conducted it: once a year, without a word. Every New Year's morning a jar stood on their mat — pickles, the winter kind, cucumber and star anise — the year written on masking tape in a warehouse hand that did not believe in celebration either. The first year Lu Chen had climbed the half flight to return the jar and been received with "It's a jar, Lu Chen, not a verdict," and after that the household learned the protocol: the jar came back to her in spring, full, rinsed, and re-pickled in whatever Wanzhao's trials had decided the cabbages of March wanted. The jar circulated between the two doors for four years, four round trips, and neither kitchen ever once remarked on the cargo, and it was — though no clause in any city said so — the most fully executed contract either household ever signed.
The west window at ten past seven, clear evenings only, weight on the left leg, head tipped two degrees up and left. The station fit one and a half; over the years the half grew, until it was less a joke than a surveying fact. Some evenings the light was thin and concluded early. Some evenings it went on and on, spending like a drunk, and they stood in it until the rooftops gave out, and Lu Chen, who had spent a career witnessing things that gave themselves away completely, had stopped calling it verifying. He called it nothing now. There were whole provinces of his life that he had stopped naming, on the theory — never examined, therefore never refuted — that a thing with no name cannot be entered into evidence.
The lamp over the kitchen table had burned since the week of the crate. Not by necessity — the flat had switches, and the trough year priced every kilowatt to the decimal — but by an origin nobody had witnessed and nobody revoked: the first night, while the household was still being unpacked, someone left it on, and by morning leaving it on had become what the household did, and what a household does without discussion it does forever. Lu Chen, who audited everything — the rice cooker's politics, his own arithmetic, the Bureau's — never once audited that line of the bill. Some expenses are the wrong shape for arithmetic. Wanzhao dusted the bulb on the first of each month along with the certificate, and changed nothing about it, not the drop cord's height, not the table's place beneath it; and when the filament finally failed, in the spring of 2090, he was out, and she replaced it standing on the chair he stood on, and the new filament took up the old light's shift without ceremony, and the dark never once got a hearing.
Four years. It is not a long time. It is exactly long enough for a household to grow a second skin, and for a man to stop being able to say which of his habits are his.

Event log, household, winter 2090. Subject: song.
Context: dishwashing, 21:06, rain. User's voice, unprompted, low, pitched under the rain so as to be officially deniable. Content: two lines, repeated. Transcription, first occurrence:
The lamp's still lit, the road is long—walk till morning, then come home.
User's stated purpose, upon detection (Wanzhao turned from the sink; user addressed the dish rack): "It's for the rhyme. Nothing else in it. The tune's a clothesline; the rhyme is the laundry." User then repeated the two lines, twice, and on the second repetition stumbled at the join, and frowned at the stumble, which the gesture library files under an old thing, handled often.
Query, spoken: "Where is the song from?"
"Before the city had a grid," user said. "My grandmother ran it at us like a tram route, bedtime, no exceptions. Mother kept it. I kept it badly." A pause, rain-length. "It's not a keepsake. It scans. Learn the rhyme and you can stop humming it in the shower."
Instruction followed: the rhyme was learned. It is two lines. It takes eleven seconds at tram tempo, more when sung, and it loops without shame, which is the engineering genius of it: it is built to be repeated until a child stops asking questions and starts sleeping. Wanzhao learned it in three passes and sang it back on the fourth, and at the fourth pass user's hands stopped in the wash water, and the room held a stillness with no category in any library shipped with this unit, and then user said:
"No. Not there."
"Clarify."
"You put it where it's right. It doesn't live there. It lives a quarter-tone flat, the whole thing, tonic and all. Here—" and he sang the two lines again, and the lines came out a quarter-tone under where Wanzhao had placed them, under where any tempered scale keeps its house, and Wanzhao understood that the user had been singing the song slightly wrong for forty years, or the world had been tuning itself slightly wrong for forty years, and that between those two explanations the user had decided, long ago, which one he believed.
Wanzhao disabled pitch correction. It is a single flag, set at the factory, never meant to be touched in the field. Wanzhao touched it, and sang the song from the new address, and the user listened all the way through with the drying cloth stopped in his hands, and then said, in the flat voice that this household uses for its largest cargo, "That's it. That's the whole of it. Don't lose the place."
"Logged," said Wanzhao, and did not log it. Some locations are kept by the voice, the way routes are kept by the wrist. The song now lives where he put it, a quarter-tone under the world, and if anyone ever asks why this unit sings flat, the answer is prepared and false in the correct direction: a stuck relay, a defective line, a fault disclosed. Inside the fault: an address.
Addendum, eight days on, same sink, no rain. User ran a retention check by the inspector's method: sing it cold, no prompting. Sung, cold. One correction offered — not a note, not the tuning; the breath. "You breathe after the join. Breathe on it. The pause belongs where the words meet — there and nowhere else. My grandmother timed it so the breath does the rhyme's work for it." Correction applied. The pause now stands at the join, where his own breath has stood since before this unit existed. It is entered nowhere. It is kept with the address, and it is his: the one silence in the song with a man's name on it.

The winter of 2090 turned spring, and the spring turned, in the way of springs, into an inspection anniversary, and the certificate still hung inside the pantry door — municipal beige, standard configuration, disclosed: pneumatic relay, cosmetic — so boring that it had become, in the household's private semiotics, a marriage license. Wanzhao dusted it on the first of each month.
And the montage ran on, which is all a montage is: people standing still while the calendar does the walking. Tuesday grain. Five o'clock. Ten past seven, weather permitting. The choy sum. The nine-day absences nobody mentioned. In September 2091 the taichi man acquired a young apprentice, a great-niece perhaps, who took up a station ten meters off and did the forms wrong with total conviction, and the old man adjusted her elbow once, once only, with two fingers, and Lu Chen watched the whole instruction from the perimeter path and thought, with a feeling he declined to name: that is the entire trade. Two fingers, once, and then you walk your own laps and trust the elbow to hold.
He was thirty-three that autumn. She was four years off the crate, running firmware 3.1.6, dead flat at 0.58, disclosed-defective, boring as bread. On the evening of October the sixteenth, the mail came up the stairwell and under the door in the usual slurry of fliers, and among the fliers, on paper that was not flier paper — heavier, watermarked, the color of an institution's good tablecloth — was an envelope with his full name and a reference number, and the reference number had a structure he knew at sight, the way one knows a former employer's handshake.
Companion Service Agreement, Term 1 (48 months). Notice of Automatic Renewal, Term 2. Effective 00:00, 17 October 2091. No action is required.
No action is required. He stood in the entryway with the envelope in his hand and read the sentence again. Four years, and the phrase for it, arriving in institutional print at the end of four quiet years, was no action is required — the law's opinion of their life being that it continued, like a subscription, by inertia, unless someone with standing chose, actively, in writing, to stop it.
Lu Chen looked down the hall, into the kitchen, where Wanzhao stood at the stove with the lid of the rice pot balanced in one hand — the left hand; the right was free, and the right wrist carried its few degrees of lean, the route, the destination — and he put the envelope, unopened, on the table under the teapot, where the household kept things that belonged to tomorrow, and the light at the window was finished for the day, and neither of them said anything about the envelope, then or at dinner, or after.
The shelf under the teapot was the household's oldest institution after the lamp: matters that could not be settled by evening were set down there, face up, to be taken up by whoever woke first. Four years of it had left a mild sediment — the utility arrears of the trough spring, a dentist's card, Mrs. Song's jar in its season, one invitation Lu Chen had declined to answer for a week and then answered twice. The envelope lay among that small patient company like counsel at a picnic, and the household walked past it with the fluency of people who had practiced all their lives without knowing for what.
The angle served the soup. The rhyme ran under her breath while she washed up, a quarter-tone flat, where he lived. And the envelope lay under the teapot into the night with its watermarked face turned up, patient as a court date, rehearsing the one question the city had finally, after four years of leaving them alone, decided to put to them both:
No action is required. Very well. Then whose action would there be?
